May 7, 2014LiMA Projects in Labour-Sending Regions
One of the key goals of the South Deep Community Trust (SDCT) is to support communities, particularly those in rural labour-sending regions. Between 2015 and 2021, the SDCT funded a smallholder farmer support initiative in Lusikisiki and Bizana, located in the Eastern Cape, in partnership with the LiMA Rural Development Foundation.
The Lusikisiki and Bizana areas possess significant agricultural potential due to their fertile soils, favorable climate, and growing economic activity. This initiative aimed to enhance small-scale farming, generate employment opportunities within the agricultural value chain, improve local food security, and connect farmers with markets to sell their produce — ultimately boosting household incomes.
The SDCT’s financial contribution, which covered 50% of the project’s budget, was matched by The Jobs Fund. Lusikisiki was one of 18 sites included in the national programme, which successfully created over 12,800 jobs across South Africa. The initiative delivered clear, measurable outcomes — increasing local food production, ensuring access to fresh and nutritious produce, and driving economic growth through job creation and greater consumer spending.
