May 3, 2014Kingswood College and St. Martin’s are two distinguished independent schools in South Africa, renowned for their commitment to academic, cultural, and athletic excellence. Located in Grahamstown (Makhanda) and Johannesburg, respectively, these institutions offer exceptional educational opportunities that can significantly enhance a student’s future prospects during their crucial early high school years.
To provide talented young learners with access to such opportunities, the South Deep Education Trust established the Grade 7 Awards program. This initiative identifies high-achieving Grade 7 students from Westonaria and grants them full scholarships to attend these prestigious schools. The scholarship covers tuition, boarding, books, transportation, sports equipment, stationery, excursions, and pocket money.
Eligible applicants were required to achieve a minimum first-term average of 65% in Grade 7. They also underwent rigorous assessments, including standardized tests and in-depth interviews with trustees and school representatives, to secure their placement.
Over two years, thirteen students were awarded five-year high school scholarships. The first cohort graduated in 2021, while the final group completed their studies in 2022. Moving forward, the program’s focus will shift from funding individual students to supporting schools directly.
