Grade 7 Scholarship Program
May 1, 2014Many communities in South Africa grapple with a disempowered youth population, often marked by a sense of despair due to limited opportunities. The South Deep Education Trust is committed to changing this narrative by providing educational opportunities to deserving school leavers, empowering them to build a brighter future for themselves and contribute meaningfully to society.
The scholarship program offers financial assistance for higher education at accredited institutions. To qualify, applicants must achieve a minimum average of 65% in their Matric exams and meet criteria related to their historically disadvantaged individual (HDI) status. Over the years, this academic benchmark has proven effective in ensuring student success. To date, 72 scholarships have been awarded under this framework, with a low dropout rate of just one in 30—primarily due to socio-economic challenges faced by recipients.
Recognizing the importance of career exposure and enhancing graduates’ employability, the Trust introduced a vacation work component in 2023. Nine scholarship recipients participated in an intensive two-month placement at South Deep Mine, gaining hands-on experience under the guidance of seasoned supervisors. Depending on their field of study, they were engaged in administration, mining operations, or the production plant, allowing them to apply their academic knowledge in a real-world setting. This invaluable practical experience will continue in 2024, further bridging the gap between education and employment.
